Actor James Van Der Beek Dies After Colon Cancer Diagnosis

James Van Der Beek — best known as Dawson Leery on the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek — has died at 48, his family announced. The family’s Instagram post said, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” They asked for privacy as they grieve their husband, father, son, brother and friend.

Van Der Beek had publicly revealed a Stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis in November 2024. In a 2024 Instagram post he wrote, “Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis … I am one of them.” He leaves behind six children.
