Actor James Van Der Beek Dies After Colon Cancer Diagnosis
James Van Der Beek — best known as Dawson Leery on the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek — has died at 48, his family announced. The family’s Instagram post said, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” They asked for privacy as they grieve their husband, father, son, brother and friend.
Van Der Beek had publicly revealed a Stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis in November 2024. In a 2024 Instagram post he wrote, “Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis … I am one of them.” He leaves behind six children.
From Small-Town Theatre to Dawson’s Creek Stardom
Van Der Beek’s acting journey began at 13 in Cheshire, Connecticut, after a football injury sidelined him. He landed the lead in a school production of Grease, caught the acting bug, and later traveled to New York with his mother to sign with an agent at 16. His big break came at 21 when he was cast as 15-year-old Dawson Leery, an aspiring filmmaker, on Dawson’s Creek.
Dawson’s Creek ran for six seasons and became a cultural touchstone. Media professor Lori Bindig Yousman noted the show “felt different” from other teen dramas of the era — not about rich kids but about more thoughtful, reflective teenagers. Dawson’s Creek explored love, school, relationships and sex in ways that pushed boundaries for teen TV, and Van Der Beek’s earnest, moody Dawson made him a heartthrob for a generation. His on-again, off-again romance with Joey, played by Katie Holmes, was central to the show’s drama and appeal.
Career After Dawson: Film, TV and Self-Parody
While Van Der Beek never again reached the same level of fame as Dawson’s Creek, he continued to work in film and television. He starred in the 1999 coming-of-age film Varsity Blues as a high school football player and played a toxic college drug dealer in 2002’s Rules of Attraction.
He also leaned into self-parody. Notably appearing as an exaggerated version of himself on the sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. Where his celebrity and Dawson legacy were the targets of jokes. That meta turn showed he could poke fun at his own image and that the Dawson character followed him throughout his career.
Final Years, Reunion, and Legacy
Despite illness, Van Der Beek remained connected to his fans and cast. In September 2025 the Dawson’s Creek cast reunited to raise money for the nonprofit F Cancer with a staged reading of the pilot on Broadway, organized by Michelle Williams. James was unable to perform because of his illness, but he contributed an emotional video thanking cast, crew and fans, calling them “the best fans in the world.”
Van Der Beek’s role on Dawson’s Creek helped launch the careers of Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams. He will be remembered for the show’s impact on teen drama and for a career that mixed earnest leading roles with self-aware comedy.
