In a New York Magazine cover story, many women have publicly discussed their experiences of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman, the author of “The Sandman” and “Coraline.”
In July, Tortoise Media said that two women had accused Gaiman of sexual assault. They also published a six-part podcast called “Master,” which addressed the claims made by five women. However, in order to protect their identities, a number of the women had only used their first names or pseudonyms, and up until today, a major news agency had not confirmed the entire scope of the story.
Another Woman Sharing Her Experience
Reporter Lila Shapiro interviewed eight women who shared similar experiences with Gaiman for the article “There Is No Safe Word” in the New York Magazine, four of whom also spoke on Tortoise’s podcast. One of these ladies, Scarlett Pavlovich, met Gaiman’s ex-wife, Amanda Palmer, in New Zealand when she was 22 years old. Before Palmer requested Pavlovich to assist watch her and Gaiman’s 5-year-old child, they became friends. When Pavlovich first met Gaiman, he offered to give her a bath in his garden’s claw-foot tub while she waited for the youngster to conclude a playdate. She claims that after that, he requested her to sit on his lap, joined her in the tub nude, and sexually abused her.

“He put his fingers straight into my ass and tried to put his penis in my ass. And I said, ‘No, no.’ Then he tried to rub his penis between my breasts, and I said ‘no’ as well. Then he asked if he could come on my face, and I said ‘no’ but he did anyway,” Pavlovich told New York Mag. “He said, ‘Call me ‘master,’ and I’ll come.’ He said, ‘Be a good girl. You’re a good little girl.’”
According to Pavlovich, this persisted for the rest of the time she looked after the family, including one incident in which he reportedly tried to have anal intercourse with her while lubricating himself with butter.

“When it was over, he called her ‘slave’ and ordered her to ‘clean him up,’” the article reports. “She protested that it wasn’t hygienic. ‘He said, “Are you defying your master?”‘ she recalls. ‘I had to lick my own shit.’”
What Neil Gaiman ‘s representatives said
“Sexual humiliation, bondage, dominance, sadism, and masochism may not be to everyone’s taste, but between consenting people, BDSM is permitted,” Gaiman’s representatives told the Tortoise podcast. The women claim that consent and particular BDSM activities were not discussed and agreed upon before they occurred, despite the fact that the New York Magazine story claims that all of the accusers had at one point cooperated by referring to him as “master” as he requested and keeping in touch with him.
Another Case
At another time, Gaiman requested Pavlovich to watch his son while he received a massage when they were both staying at a hotel in Auckland. He then allegedly had intercourse with her while his kid was present and kept talking to him while doing so, according to her. According to Pavlovich, she was in a “state of astonishment” when the event occurred and questioned Gaiman, “What the fuck are you doing?”
Neil Gaiman Denying Everything
Since the release of the Tortoise podcast, Gaiman has vehemently refuted all accusations made against him. Claiming that all of their interactions were voluntary. Pavlovich’s team referred to his claim of the hotel room incident as “false, not to mention terrible” in a statement. On request for more comment on the New York Magazine article was not immediately answered by Gaiman’s representatives.
After that, though, Pavlovich kept in touch with Gaiman, even telling him once that their exchanges had been amicable. She eventually consented to sign an NDA and received $9,200 in nine installments, according to NY Mag. She reported him for sexual assault to the police in January 2023. But a police representative informed NY Mag that the “case has now been closed.”
