Daylight Saving Time Ends! With summer coming to an end and autumn’s chilly air taking hold, many of us start preparing for DST to end. This is the time of year when school starts again, the leaves are changing amber, and we get ready for one of the least popular customs: setting the clocks back.
Extended, sun-filled days are giving way to early sunsets, even though summer officially lasts until September 22. Changing the clocks gives most of us an extra hour of sleep, which is great, but it also means that there is less daylight in the evenings, which is less great. This custom is approaching for those living in the majority of the United States and Canada.
When does daylight saving time end in 2024?
Since March 10, we’ve relished the additional hours of evening sunshine, but good things come to an end. This year, Sunday, November 3 at 2 a.m. is when daylight saving time officially ends. Most contemporary electronics, like your phone and smartwatch, will automatically update the time, but unless you prefer being early for everything the next day, remember to manually change the clocks on your oven and in your car!
Who decides when daylight saving time ends?
The U.S. Department of Transportation is in charge of the twice-yearly clock changes, but they are powerless to stop the cycle. Congress really sets the timetable, which is as follows: each year, DST begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. The Uniform Time Act of 1966, which sought to save energy and maximize daylight throughout the summer, is whence this custom originated.
Which states skip daylight saving time altogether?
Not all states in the union take part in the rotation of clocks. The majority of Arizona and Hawaii, with the exception of the Navajo Nation, observe standard time all year round, thus there is no confusion about spring forward and fall back. They don’t need the switch since they have an plenty of natural daylight all year round.
What states wish they didn’t observe this time change?
Numerous states have made an effort to stop changing the clocks in recent years. Actually, legislation supporting continuing to observe DST year-round has been enacted in almost every state, but there’s a catch. States may elect to observe standard time throughout the year under the Uniform Time Act, but unless specifically directed by Congress, they cannot continue to observe daylight saving time.
A few states have approved resolutions asking Congress to permanently implement daylight saving time, including Oklahoma and Ohio. Congress has been sluggish to move on these plans, though, despite the urgency.
Will the clocks ever stop changing?
Legislators at the federal level have proposed legislation to permanently implement daylight saving time. One such measure is Sen. Marco Rubio’s Sunshine Protection Act, which has bipartisan support. However, the measure is still blocked in committee as of right now. The idea of a permanent daylight saving time is still up in the air, despite increasing support from governments and the general public.
So on November 3, when daylight saving time ends, you may enjoy that additional hour of sleep while Congress discusses. For the time being, the custom endures!
