Canada needs to celebrate Black success stories, like that of Fabienne Colas, a successful actor in her native Haiti, who started the Toronto Black Film Festival and was photographed in 2016.Bernard Weil

My Teacher Was Dead Wrong

Last week, I was at a Black History Month event, chatting with an older gentleman. He liked the music and talks, but he wondered, “Why just one month for Black history? Shouldn’t we celebrate everyone together?”

It’s a fair question. The Month can feel like a short burst of recognition in a year of silence. But it’s more than that. It’s a chance to spotlight stories that often get lost.

The Shocking Truth

Back in high school, I had a teacher who told us, “Black people didn’t do anything for Canada.” Can you imagine how that felt? It hit me hard. I wanted to speak up, but I didn’t know how.

Then things started to change. We got a Black vice-principal, and suddenly, we were learning about amazing Black Canadians. People like Elijah McCoy, whose innovation changed the way things worked for railroads. And Dr. Clement Courtenay Ligoure, who saved people’s lives in Halifax when no one else was willing to.

Today’s Heroes, Tomorrow’s Legends

It’s not only about the past during this month. It concerns both the here and now. Individuals such as Fabienne Colas, who is bringing Black stories to the big screen, or Eugenia Duodu Addy, who ensures that every child has an opportunity to pursue science.

Jean Augustine proposed designating February as Black History Month in 1995. Although it was a significant event, the true obstacle is ensuring that Black history is recognized each month.

Why Black History Month Matters

Black history is not just for Black people. It is, in fact, for all of us. When we celebrate Black stories, we celebrate Canadian stories. And that strengthens, enriches, and enlivens our nation.

So let’s continue the discussion. Let’s honor Black History every day of the year, not just in February. We all benefit when we accept variety, after all.

Come along with us on this voyage of exploration, joy, and transformation. Let’s recreate history together, one tale at a time.
