Sanders Absent from Colorado Summer Camps
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has been away at his Texas estate dealing with an unspecified health issue, even as CU’s annual summer football camps began last week in Boulder. Sanders had appeared at these camps in 2023 and 2024, and operating them is an official duty in his CU contract. His image is also used by the university to promote the camps. Yet this year, it remains unclear when he will return to Boulder.
Son Confirms “Feeling Well,” Return Open-Ended
On Sunday, Deion Jr. joined a YouTube livestream from their Canyon, Texas estate and said his father was in his room and “feeling well.” He added, “He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through.” Regarding the timing of coming back to Boulder, Deion Jr. said on June 8:
- “When we get back in Boulder, I don’t know.”
- “I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m gonna sit here with him.”
Canceled Engagement and Past Leg Health Struggles
Sanders, 57, also canceled a scheduled June 8 speaking engagement in Florida due to an “unavoidable last-minute scheduling change,” according to The Foundation for Sickle Cell Research. He was replaced by Magic Johnson. In 2023, blood clot issues in his legs led him to miss a Pac-12 media event in Las Vegas. Since 2021, these leg problems required serious care, including amputation of two toes and removal of parts of his left calf.

Support and Media Silence
Sanders has been out of the media spotlight since the NFL draft in April, hinting at a health issue without specifying details. On a late-May podcast with Asante Samuel, Samuel said, “I hope you’re feeling better,” and asked if he had tried fasting. The university did not immediately respond when asked if Sanders would appear at this week’s camp activities. He remains accompanied in Texas by CU athletic trainer Lauren Askevold, who has managed his leg care.

Implications for Colorado Football Season
With Sanders’ return date unclear, Colorado’s preparations continue under interim oversight. The Buffaloes open their season on August 29 at home against Georgia Tech. How Sanders’ absence affects summer camp routines and early-season planning remains to be seen, pending his recovery and eventual return to Boulder.
