R-Truth Released by WWE After 17-Year Run, Stars and Fans React

Table of Content

WWE announced on Sunday that R-Truth, real name Ron Killings, has been released from his contract. He revealed the news on social media: “I just got released from WWE. I want to thank WWE for the ride, but MOSTLY I want to thank each and EVERYONE OF YOU who was along for the ride. Thank you for all the love, support, and appreciation you have given me over the years. Thank you.” According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, WWE chose not to renew his deal, ending a storied second stint that began in 2008.

A Career Spanning Decades

R-Truth’s journey with WWE actually began in 1999, when he first competed until 2001. He made his mark on TNA Wrestling from 2002 to 2007 before returning to WWE. Over his 17 years, he became famous not for winning world titles, but for his comedic timing, in-ring antics, and a unique bond with fans.

Early in his WWE run, R-Truth connected with crowds by rapping his entrance music and leading the “what’s up?” chant. He distinguished himself as one of the best comedic wrestlers in the business, often making fellow superstars break character mid-segment.

One of his most memorable bits involved “Little Jimmy”—an imaginary child he’d frequently introduce, confusing opponents with his playful banter. R-Truth’s promos sometimes veered off course, like when he earnestly questioned why he wasn’t in a Money in the Bank match he clearly hadn’t qualified for. In 2020, he went viral after making Brock Lesnar laugh during a promo, and he has cracked up the likes of Roman Reigns, Dolph Ziggler, and Randy Orton with his unpredictability.

Recent Storylines and Final Matches

In 2024, R-Truth tried, in his signature fashion, to insert himself into The Judgment Day, despite their skepticism. He even joined their WrestleMania 40 celebration—misting up group members when he consistently mixed up Tommaso Ciampa with Paul “Triple H” Levesque. The most famous mix-up was his attempt to enter the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble match, an endearing reminder of his playful persona.

Most recently, he feuded with his “childhood hero,” John Cena, although he is older than the WWE Champion. On May 24’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, the 53-year-old donned Cena’s attire and mimic’s his entrance, only to fall to Cena in a spirited match. R-Truth’s final in-ring appearance for WWE came on May 30’s SmackDown against JR Caylen, closing the curtain on a memorable career.

Championship Legacy

Although R-Truth never captured a WWE Championship, he collected a variety of titles:

  • Two-Time United States Champion
  • Two-Time Hardcore Champion
  • Two-Time Tag Team Champion (including tag gold alongside The Miz as The Awesome Truth at WrestleMania 40)
  • 53-Time 24/7 Champion: This title became R-Truth’s signature. The 24/7 rule allowed anyone to challenge at any time—whether backstage, at airports, or even at home. Truth’s creativity in these segments turned him into a viral sensation, frequently losing and regaining the belt in the most unexpected locations.

Reactions to the Release

News of R-Truth’s release follows two waves of WWE releases in 2025, one in February and another in May. Fellow wrestlers took to social media to express their grief:

  • Rhea Ripley, who interacted with R-Truth during The Judgment Day storyline, wrote, “In all seriousness, this is literally so heartbreaking… Thank you Truth.”
  • Damian Priest shared a photo from The Judgment Day’s viral celebration, mourning the loss of his friend.
  • The Miz, R-Truth’s former tag team partner, called him “one in a lifetime” while celebrating their WrestleMania 40 tag title victory.

What’s Next for Ron Killings?

At 53, R-Truth—or Ron Killings—leaves WWE with an enduring legacy. His ability to balance comedy and athleticism, combined with an innate gift for connecting with fans, made every appearance special. As he begins a new chapter, many wonder if he’ll explore opportunities in other wrestling promotions, entertainment fields, or even coaching.

For nearly two decades, R-Truth has been synonymous with offbeat charisma and unpredictable excitement. His departure marks the end of an era, but his contributions to WWE will not be forgotten. After a storied 17-year career, his fans eagerly await his next move.
