Saturday’s US vs Canada soccer match will go down in history. But not in the way that any American fan could have imagined. The United States men’s national team (USMNT) suffered their first home loss to Canada since 1957 when they were defeated 2-1 in their first match following their sad Copa America departure.

If you watched the game, you may have been wondering, as many of us did, “What the heck is going on with this team?”

From mental errors to mishandled defense, the USMNT looked unprepared from the opening whistle. In order to give younger players an opportunity to shine. Interim coach Mikey Varas rotated the team, leaving out stars like Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams. Among the most prominent switches? In goal, Patrick Schulte. And despite Schulte’s best efforts, it was soon apparent that this team was not coming together as it ought to.

Let us now explore the most significant occasions.

US vs Canada – A Tough Start, A Tougher Mentality

You could tell right away that something wasn’t quite right. Canada had a confident approach and a well-defined plan going into the match. While the USMNT was still trying to figure out who they were, they appeared to be a squad that understood precisely who they were. The squad was obviously harmed by the absence of familiar names. But more than strategy, something was wrong with the team’s mindset.

After the game, Varas acknowledged to himself, “The guys’ mindset is the issue.” We tell each other the truth, and they are aware of it. They know, even though I adore those men.

As supporters, we’ve witnessed glimpses of this team’s talent in the past. But situations like these highlight how far they still need to go. That was all Canada needed to win in a sport where split-second decisions count. Taking full advantage of the USMNT’s lack of concentration.

The Rise of Patrick Schulte

Patrick Schulte was the one player that stood out in this game. With many uncertainties about the goalie situation going into the game, Schulte performed admirably. In an indication of confidence well beyond his 23 years of age, Schulte stepped up with Matt Turner now warming the bench at Crystal Palace.

He made a few vital stops that prevented the game from going out of control despite the defeat. Even when Canada pushed high, he reacted quickly and appeared at ease with the ball at his feet. This was a performance to build on for a young goalie with a lot of room for improvement. You don’t often see someone with Schulte’s relative youth hold his ground under the type of pressure he did on Saturday.

And let’s face it, the USMNT’s goalkeeping has been under suspicion for a long. Schulte may eliminate one job from our concerns if he continues in this manner.

Time to Move On from Tim Ream?

The game also revealed a hard fact: Tim Ream and other veterans may need to be phased out. Ream helped solidify the defense throughout the 2022 World Cup and was a vital player, but in US vs Canada his performance raised some significant questions. His costly error in the second half was the direct cause of Canada’s second goal, a mishandled pass that left both spectators and commentators perplexed.

Although Ream’s expertise has been essential, the USMNT has to start planning for the future as they aim to 2026. There are players like Auston Trusty and Chris Richards in the wings, and the team’s progress can be impeded if the older defenders are kept in reserve. From now on, each game Ream participates in can represent a lost chance for younger players to obtain the necessary experience.

Mauricio Pochettino, the soon-to-be USMNT coach, will have to make a difficult choice. Respect for seasoned athletes must be balanced with the necessity to get ready for what’s ahead.

The Mentality Problem

The most important lesson from the US vs Canada game may have had less to do with skill or strategy and more to do with mindset. This wasn’t just any game, after all. The USMNT should have gone into this game with a chip on their shoulder, especially after Canadian coach Jesse Marsch picked his side to win 2-1. And what do you know? That’s precisely what took place.

That begs the question, why didn’t the USMNT win the game? Why did they appear uninteresting, unresponsive, and flat? Among the few players who shown the requisite fervor and passion was Aidan Morris. But that motivation was absent for a great number of others.

When things became hard, team leaders like Tyler Adams used to inspire the group. However, with Adams down and no obvious successor stepping up, it’s become increasingly painfully clear that this squad needs a captain who can be heard when playing. If Pochettino wants to keep the USMNT from having similar performances in the future, he must address this crucial issue.

What’s Next for the USMNT?

The USMNT needs time to recover, think, and refocus before the Concacaf Nations League in November. Even while this defeat hurts, it’s crucial to keep in mind that a team requires time to rebuild. It may be necessary for veterans like Ream to politely stand aside for the new generation, while fresh faces like Schulte need chances to establish themselves.

Though it’s also an opportunity to grow and learn, this game is a sobering reminder of how much work they still need to put in. The potential of this team gives supporters optimism, but patience is essential. While the focus of Canadian headlines today may be on their historic victory, the USMNT’s journey will once again take center stage tomorrow.

This is about more than simply a loss in the end. Knowing where we are, where we want to go, and what it will take to get there are important. It all comes down to striking the correct mix between youth and experience, strategy and mindset. Looking ahead to upcoming games, one thing is certain: Pochettino will face his greatest test yet in assembling this team, which has all the components for success.
