With artificial intelligence, Samsung hopes to elevate texting, photography, and gaming on its next-generation flagship Galaxy S24 smartphones.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 smartphones—which the firm claims will usher in the next age of smartphone use. Unveiled on Wednesday at its annual Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event.

The push for AI is a result of smartphone manufacturers attempting to stand out in a crowded market. And spark interest in an area where innovation has mostly stopped in previous years.

The 6.8-inch Galaxy S24 Ultra ($1,299.99), which will be offered in gray, black, violet, and yellow hues, will be the first smartphone to be housed in a titanium case. Samsung.com offers titanium in several hues, such as orange, blue, and green. In addition to amber yellow, cobalt violet, marble gray, and onyx black, the 6.2-inch Galaxy S24 ($799.99) and 6.7-inch Galaxy S24+ ($999) come in more colors.

Relying less on the cloud and integrating generative AI on the device itself allows Samsung to reduce latency. And improve user experience. According to the business, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform also maximizes generative AI and its potent AI Engine.

According to Jitesh Ubrani, an analyst at market research company IDC, “a lot of AI implementation today is somewhat gimmicky. And Samsung, along with other vendors, don’t have a whole lot to gain from adding these features. Rather, they probably stand to lose more if they were to exclude AI altogether.”

The announcement was made the day after statistics from market research firm IDC showed that Apple had finally surpassed Samsung in smartphone shipments during the previous quarter.

According to the report’s press release, Apple will lead the smartphone market in 2023. The last time a manufacturer other than Samsung held that position was in 2010. “Apple’s record-breaking market share and first-ever position at the top of the largest consumer electronics market drove a sort of shifting of power at the top.”

A complete AI experience

A lot of Samsung’s current features are being enhanced by AI. With its range of live translate tools, one can now translate conversations in real time. And provide a transcript while standing next to another person in a split-screen view. In the meanwhile, texts will be translated into 13 languages in real time using Samsung’s keyboard.

Pre-made formats are another update coming to Samsung Notes to help with note-taking organization. With the use of voice commands and generative AI, Android Auto will enable users to ask for message summaries or suggested responses from other apps.

Users may ask subtle inquiries or long-hold the home button to learn more about what they see. Like, a landmark in the background of someone’s social network profile, to make internet searches more customized.

There will be more adjustments made to the camera system. The 50MP sensor of the Galaxy S24 Ultra may be magnified up to ten times thanks to the Quad Tele System. Which also has a new 5-times optical zoom lens. It also boasts improved night photography capabilities. Users can make little adjustments to images using the AI-powered Edit Suggestion feature. Like straightening up crooked photographs or tilting an item or person slightly.

According to the business, a watermark appears when its gadgets utilize generative AI to alter a picture.

Samsung S24 – Making an impression

Even though AI for smartphones isn’t brand-new—Google’s most recent Pixel 8 series debuted in October 2023 with a number of AI features. Samsung’s size may raise customer awareness of the potential. After all, Google’s Pixel lineup continues to be a niche product; according to statistics from ABI Research. Its worldwide market share for smartphones is still under 1%.

However, it’s reported that Apple will be releasing iOS 18 with new AI-powered Siri capabilities ahead of the September launch of the iPhone 16. The bespoke CPUs of the iPhone 16 models may enable the exclusive use of some on-device generative AI technologies.

According to IDC’s Ubrani, “Apple’s silence on all things AI speaks volumes as many in the industry believe Apple is potentially lagging.” Nevertheless, none of Samsung’s new AI functions will serve as the company’s main marketing feature.
