FSU Campus on High Alert

Shortly after noon on Thursday, Florida State University activated its emergency notification system, FSU Alert, warning of an active shooter near the Student Union. Students and staff were instructed to “lock and stay away from all doors and windows” and await further instructions.

Within minutes, the sound of sirens and the sight of emergency vehicles descending on campus confirmed the gravity of the situation. Law enforcement sources later told CNN that a suspect was in custody.


Six Victims Rushed to Hospital

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare confirmed it received six patients with gunshot wounds. A hospital spokesperson reported:

  • One patient in critical condition
  • Five patients in serious condition
  • All six had suffered gunshot injuries

The extent of each injury remains under investigation, according to preliminary law enforcement reports.

Witness Accounts from FSU Students

Emily Palmer, a 21-year-old student near the Student Union, described the panic:

“I’m shaking … It’s just a lot going on. I’m concerned about my friends—some are being evacuated with their hands up.”

Meanwhile, Joshua Sirmans, a junior studying in the main library, recounted:

“Alarms began going off warning of an active shooter. Officers escorted us out with our hands over our heads.”

Messages via FSU Alert continued to advise sheltering in place as authorities methodically cleared buildings.

FSU Responds: Lockdown and Investigation

Richard Rind, director of transportation and parking at FSU, says he was locked down across the street from the Student Union:

“I heard shots and saw people running. Many emergency vehicles on scene, but we couldn’t see much as we were locked down.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed it is “actively engaged in the incident” on campus. CNN has reached out to the Tallahassee Police Department and Leon County Sheriff’s Office for further details.
