President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Jeanine Pirro will be the interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. He broke the news on Truth Social, praising her as a “powerful crusader for victims of crime” and noting she was the first woman elected to several judicial posts. This move comes after his initial pick, Ed Martin, faced insurmountable pushback from Capitol Hill Republicans.
Pirro’s Legal and Media Credentials
Pirro’s career spans both law and television. She began as Westchester County district attorney, then served as a state judge. In 2005, she moved to Fox News, hosting Justice with Judge Jeanine for ten years. Today, she co-hosts The Five, one of cable’s highest-rated shows.
On The Five and her weekend program, Pirro defended Trump and attacked his critics. Portions of her broadcasts appeared in Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation suit against Fox News, settled for $787 million in 2023. Smartmatic also sued Fox and named Pirro as a defendant. Both she and Fox deny any wrongdoing.
A Fox News spokesperson confirmed she leaves the network immediately. Bret Baier broke the announcement on Fox Thursday evening, saying, “She will be leaving Fox to take this position and we wish her well.”

Capitol Hill Reaction
Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), who blocked Martin’s nomination, applauded Pirro’s selection on X:
“Jeanine Pirro has had a long and storied career as a prosecutor and she is a great choice by @POTUS to serve as U.S. Attorney for DC!”
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called the switch “probably a good decision” and teased Trump’s next pick as “big.”

Ed Martin’s Reassignment
With Martin’s nomination withdrawn, Trump reassigned him to the Justice Department as:
- Director of the Weaponization Working Group
- Associate Deputy Attorney General
- Pardon Attorney
Martin’s confirmation had stalled due to incomplete disclosures of media appearances and past praise for a January 6 rioter. As acting U.S. Attorney, he had referred to the D.C. office as “President Trump’s lawyers” and demoted senior prosecutors handling Capitol riot cases.

Trump–Pirro Connection
Trump and Pirro have long been allies. She was a regular at Mar-a-Lago before his 2016 campaign. In her book Don’t Lie to Me, she dedicated the work to Trump. On his final day in office in 2021, she lobbied successfully for her ex-husband’s pardon—a decision that became Trump’s last official act.

What’s Next
As interim U.S. Attorney, Pirro will lead federal prosecutions in D.C., covering high-profile cases tied to national security, corruption, and the January 6 investigations. The White House has not yet indicated whether her nomination will go to the Senate for confirmation or if another candidate will follow when her interim term ends on May 20.
