Trailer Teases High-Tech Threat in Toy Story 5
Pixar debuted a full trailer for toy story 5 on Thursday, Feb. 19, showing a reunion for Tom Hanks and Tim Allen’s Woody and Buzz Lightyear, plus Joan Cusack’s Jessie, as the gang faces a new kind of toy. The story centers on a frog-shaped smart tablet named Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee, whose disruptive ideas about what’s best for Bonnie upend the toys’ world.
The trailer sets up a simple question: will traditional toys survive in a world where a smart device decides playtime? The synopsis teases that Woody, Buzz and Jessie must confront Lilypad’s charm and tech-first solutions to keep their place in Bonnie’s life. Conan O’Brien joins the cast as a “toilet-training tech toy” called Smarty Pants, while Tony Hale returns as Forky from Toy Story 4.
Stars Return — Voices You Know
The film brings back several familiar voices, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack. Other returning cast members listed in the press release include John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Blake Clark, Annie Potts and Bonnie Hunt.
New characters arrive as well: Lilypad is voiced by Greta Lee. And additions include Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, Craig Robinson as GPS hippo Atlas. Shelby Rabara as camera toy Snappy, Scarlett Spears as Bonnie, Mykal-Michelle Haris as Blaze, and Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase.
Creative Team and Legacy Links to the Series
toy story 5 is written by Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote the original two Toy Story films and Toy Story 4. He shares directing duties with McKenna Harris, a story artist on Pixar’s Luca and a member of the senior creative team on Elio. (The third film in the series was written by Michael Arndt.)
The directors said in a statement that exploring how legacy toys respond “to today’s world of technology” has been both “hilarious and poignant,” a theme the trailer clearly leans into.
What the Trailer Shows
- Lilypad, a frog-shaped smart tablet, arrives with its own ideas about play and Bonnie’s best interests.
- Buzz and Woody face direct challenges to their roles when the new toy pushes a tech-first approach.
- Moments of comedy and heart: a Sergio Busquets-style through ball (a perfectly placed pass in the trailer) sets up one of the key finishes. And Forky appears again, maintaining ties to toy story 4.
