Ambush during warrant service in North Codorus Township

A pennsylvania shooting unfolded Wednesday afternoon on Haar Road in North Codorus Township, York County, when a suspect opened fire as law enforcement attempted to serve an arrest warrant. Three officers were killed and two remain in critical but stable condition, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said. The shooter was later shot and killed by police.

Law enforcement sources told CNN the officers were on their way to arrest the suspect after stalking and criminal trespass charges were filed in York County. Officials say the shooter appeared to be lying in wait when officers arrived.

Rural scene turns into major emergency

The shooting happened in a pastoral area of York County dotted with small barns and farm fields about 2½ hours west of Philadelphia. A medevac helicopter was later spotted in a grassy field near the scene, surrounded by flashing lights from multiple responding fire engines, police cars and ambulances.

  • Location: Haar Road, North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
  • Circumstances: Officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant and restraining order after the suspect was reported stalking a farmhouse resident.
  • Suspect: The shooter, who was killed by police, is the ex-boyfriend of a woman who lived in the farmhouse, law enforcement officials said.

How the incident unfolded

Police say the ex-girlfriend reported on Tuesday that she had seen the man stalking the residence from a nearby cornfield. Northern York police obtained an arrest warrant and a restraining order but were unable to find the suspected shooter during an attempt to serve him Tuesday night.

When officers returned the following day, the camouflage-wearing shooter opened fire from the cornfield, striking and killing three Northern York officers. He then moved toward the house and engaged three York County sheriffs; two were shot and one returned fire, killing the shooter, officials said. It remains unclear whether the shooter was waiting for the ex-girlfriend or the officers.

Community reaction and wider context

Residents described the scene as shocking for a quiet farm community. “This isn’t a big city. This is wide open spaces,” as per local resident Dave Miller. Reflecting how uncommon gun violence on this scale is in the area.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro urged people to keep the officers’ families in their thoughts. Praising law enforcement families for “running toward danger.” Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday called the deaths “an absolute tragedy,” noting his ties to York County. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are supporting local officials. And pledged full federal support for the investigation.

Broader pattern and statistics

As per officials, this is the second rural shooting in the state this year that involves officers. Referencing a recent incident in Susquehanna County where a suspect who had killed a neighbor later fatally shot by police also shot two state troopers. So far this year, FBI data show 37 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. In 2024, 64 officer deaths involved a crime.

What officials say next

Ministry and federal officials are continuing the investigation into the shooting. Authorities have not identified the officers involved or specified which agencies they served. Local and federal teams are working together to piece together the timeline and motives behind the ambush.
