Joshua Jahn Identified as Shooter in Dallas ICE Facility Attack

What happened at the Dallas ICE facility

A shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas left one detainee dead and two others critically injured, officials said. The Department of Homeland Security said the victims were detainees; one of the wounded is a Mexican national, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed. The detainees had been arrested, were in the country illegally and were due to be transferred to a longer-term facility, ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan told Fox News.

Authorities say the gunman fired “indiscriminately” from a nearby rooftop – described by DHS as a “sniper.” No law enforcement personnel were injured.

Suspect identified as Joshua Jahn

Sources identified the shooter as Joshua Jahn, 29, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, officials said. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons told Fox News Jahn was “known to law enforcement.” Investigators are examining various aspects of his life and executing search warrants where they believe he lived in suburbs outside Dallas.

Evidence and the federal investigation

  • The FBI is treating the incident “as an act of targeted violence,” Special Agent in Charge Joe Rothrock said.
  • FBI Director Kash Patel posted images of bullet casings found near the suspected shooter that reportedly contained “messages that are anti-ICE in nature.”
  • Aerial video showed officers searching a building where authorities say the gunman fired from. Investigators also searched a Toyota at an office building near the ICE facility; the vehicle displayed a sign about “radioactive fallout,” and it was cleared by the bomb squad before being searched.
  • Authorities are executing search warrants tied to where the suspect may have lived as the probe continues.

Reactions from federal and state leaders

The shooting prompted swift political responses. President Donald Trump blamed “radical left Democrats” for the violence and referenced the reported anti-ICE messages on shell casings. Vice President JD Vance echoed claims that inflammatory rhetoric played a role. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told CNN that evidence suggests the alleged shooter “was very much against our ICE officers” and that the attacker fired widely across the building rather than at a single spot.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the attack “an attack against our country,” urging that immigration enforcement proceed “without interruption.” Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson called for healing and unity, while Democratic state Rep. Rafael Anchía urged action to address gun violence and stressed the need to denounce violence in all forms. Rep. Marc Veasey urged elected officials to stop divisive rhetoric and offer comfort rather than accusation.

Victims and consular response

One detainee died and two hospitalized. Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed one of the injured is a Mexican national and said the consulate in Dallas has requested unrestricted access to the wounded person. The ministry expressed concern and said it would protect the rights of Mexicans abroad through its consular network.

Witness accounts and local actions

Witnesses described chaos as shots rang out. One man, Shane Reynolds, said he took cover behind a chain-link fence and heard “anywhere between six to ten” shots. Video from a woman waiting outside the facility captured gunfire and frantic calls to “stay inside the car.” The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department increased patrols around an ICE processing center in California out of caution after the Dallas shooting.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) condemned the attack, saying “violence is never the answer,” and called for lowering the temperature in public discourse.

Where the investigation stands

Officials continue to process the scene, execute search warrants and gather forensic evidence. The FBI is leading the probe, and federal, state and local agencies remain involved. Bullet casings with anti-ICE messages and the suspected shooter’s reported motivations are focal points of the investigation. Authorities say they are still determining whether the shooter was armed with additional weapons or had accomplices.
