Some consumers found themselves asking, “is Venmo down?” and “is PayPal down?” after both services experienced reported disruptions on Thursday, Oct. 16. Problems began piling up around 11:15 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.com, and outage reports for both apps peaked at about noon ET.

PayPal did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes, but by 1 p.m. ET the company said: “PayPal and Venmo experienced a brief service disruption that has since been resolved.”

The trouble-tracking site Downdetector posted updates on X noting “user reports indicate problems” with both platforms. Some frustrated users took to social media to complain:

“Is something wrong with yalls app? Just keeps face scanning and loading over and over,” one Venmo user wrote.
“I can’t log into my account from the app, nor on the website,” another PayPal user said.

KRON reported the spike in complaints began after 8 a.m. PDT. Within an hour, DownDetector showed nearly 9,600 PayPal complaints and about 8,300 Venmo complaints.

Company response and timeline

PayPal’s status page indicated all systems were operational again by 10 a.m. PDT, and a PayPal representative later told Nexstar’s KRON that a “brief technical issue impacting users” had been fixed. The company did not provide specifics on what caused the disruption.

This outage follows earlier disruptions months ago, when PayPal and Venmo users experienced problems with checkout pages and other features.
