Eagles Opener Marred by Ejection and Lightning Suspension

Table of Content

Early Chaos: Carter Ejected Six Seconds In

The Eagles’ season opener against the Dallas Cowboys got off to a wild start when Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected before the first play from scrimmage. During an injury delay after the opening kickoff for Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren, cameras caught Carter and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott face-to-face. As they separated, Carter spit on Prescott. Prescott alerted an official, who threw a flag and sent Carter off the field for unsportsmanlike conduct — just six seconds into the game. Fans booed as Carter walked off slowly, holding his helmet behind his back.

The penalty set the tone early: Philadelphia was hit with a 15-yard penalty, and Dallas capitalized by marching down the field and scoring on a six-play opening drive capped by a 1-yard Javonte Williams rush.

Hurts, Offense Keep Eagles Competitive Despite Setbacks

Quarterback Jalen Hurts continued to show the form that carried the team last season, making plays with his arm and legs. Hurts had two rushing touchdowns to help Philadelphia take a 21-20 halftime lead. His long 51-yard strike to Jahan Dotson late in the half set up a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Saquon Barkley with 51 seconds left before halftime.

  • Hurts completed his first six passes, mostly short throws that kept drives alive.
  • He scored scrambling TDs of 8 and 4 yards, matching Cowboys scores each time.
  • Despite Carter’s absence, Philadelphia’s offense stayed aggressive and productive in the first half.

Cowboys’ Offense Answers, Special Teams Contribute

Dak Prescott returned to the field healthy and showed mobility and accuracy. He opened the game with a big 32-yard gain to CeeDee Lamb on third-and-1, helping set up one of Javonte Williams’ goal-line touchdowns. The Cowboys’ early success was aided by Philadelphia’s penalty and by the absence of Carter on the defensive line after the ejection.

Game Suspended: Lightning Halts Action with Eagles Up 24-20

The matchup at Lincoln Financial Field was suspended due to lightning with 4:44 left in the third quarter and Philadelphia leading 24-20. The pause came at 10:26 p.m. ET as officials prioritized player and fan safety. At the time of the suspension, the game had been a back-and-forth opener. That featured big plays on both sides and emotional moments for both teams.

Inactives and Match Notes

Cowboys inactives: RB Jaydon Blue, LB Shemar James, DT Mazi Smith, OT Ajani Cornelius, OL Hakeem Adeniji, OL Trevor Keegan, DT Perrion Winfrey.

Eagles inactives: LB Azeez Ojulari, QB Tanner McKee, DE Ogbo Okoronkwo, C Drew Kendall, OT Cameron Williams, DT Ty Robinson, OG Kenyon Green.

What This Means Going Forward

Carter, 24, was one of the top pieces of a defense that ranked No. 1 last season. He recorded 4.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss that year. His ejection removes a disruptive force from the Eagles’ defensive front and could alter rotations going forward. The suspension due to lightning added another wrinkle to a game already shaped by emotion and big plays from both quarterbacks.
