L-R: Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Sarah Ferguson and Ehud Barak
Notable Figures Mentioned in the Files
The latest DOJ release names many high-profile individuals. Notably, Elon Musk appears in several 2012–2013 email exchanges with Epstein about visiting his private island (see coverage by The Guardian and AP News). For example, Musk wrote that only he and his then-partner wanted to go by helicopter (Musk later denied ever visiting).
Similarly, Howard Lutnick was invited to Epstein’s island in 2012; his wife accepted, though Lutnick says he cut ties years earlier.
Internationally, emails show Prince Andrew invited Epstein to Buckingham Palace after his 2008 conviction. Other royalty and prominent bankers also appear in lists of dinners or correspondence. In business circles, dozens of CEOs and celebrities surface in travel logs and schedules.
Clarifications from Authorities
It’s crucial to note that mere mention in the documents isn’t evidence of criminal activity. The DOJ itself warned that some released materials were “fake or sensationalist claims” submitted to the FBI.
For example, a summary showed FBI tips about President Trump, but DOJ emphasized those were unverified and likely false. Likewise, many people contacted Epstein for ordinary reasons (business meetings, social events). The AP and Reuters reports stress that Epstein often name-dropped famous people, but there’s no proof they engaged in any crimes.
What This Means for the Named Individuals
Most public figures linked to Epstein have responded by denying any involvement in wrongdoing. Musk reiterated he “declined repeated invitations” to Epstein’s island.
A Virginia Giuffre accuser was found in Maxwell’s draft statements, but those have nothing to do with those who simply appear in emails. Each person named is now facing media scrutiny, but investigators note the files include everything – even innocuous mentions.
