Armani Group Confirms Giorgio Armani’s Death at 91

With “infinite sorrow,” the Armani Group announced the death of Giorgio Armani. The company said he was “surrounded by his loved ones” when he passed and that he worked until his final days, staying involved with the collections and ongoing projects. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Armani “a symbol of the best of Italy,” praising his elegance, creativity and dedication.

Giorgio Armani’s Life in Fashion and Film

Armani’s fashion legacy began in 1975 when he and Sergio Galeotti founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A. He quickly became a go-to designer for Hollywood: in 1978 he dressed Diane Keaton when she won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Annie Hall,” and in 1980 he created the wardrobe for “American Gigolo” starring Richard Gere. Since the mid-1970s, the name Armani has stood for understated luxury.

Company Tribute and Final Wishes

The Armani Group posted on Instagram that Armani was “indefatigable to the end” and that his precise vision shaped not just clothes and accessories, but a wider “way of being and presenting oneself.” The company said Armani hoped to leave “a mark of commitment, respect and genuine care for people and for reality.”

In keeping with his explicit wishes, the company announced a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, and that the funeral itself will be held privately.

A Nation Mourns and a Legacy Endures

Prime Minister Meloni wrote on X that Armani brought “luster to Italian fashion” and inspired the world. The designer’s recent health struggles had been visible: he missed his group’s shows at Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June for the first time, and the company noted he had been unwell for some time.

Armani’s work — from tailoring to film wardrobes — reshaped modern style. The company’s statement summed it up. His style was “a way of being,” informed by curiosity and attention to people and the present.
